If you need to draw and describe it before it can be built...4
Great document trail for programming or machining. When opened, there is graph paper on the left page and lined paper on the right. Sketch your designs and describe the intent. Later, come back and look for the path not taken.

I have a half dozen of these I used in lab classes. Great way to look back on what you've done (and thought) before getting so jaded.

A caveat: this is listed as a 24-pack. It isn't. It is one notebook. It is kind of pricey, but it is also fairly unique.
