Great for small to medium knives
By Paul Summers
I purchased a basic Lansky 3 hone kit to sharpen my pocket knives (Bucks, Leathermans, and Victorinoxes). After reading several good articles on the subject, and many hours of practise, I can now consistently put an edge on my knives that is as good or better than when they were new. The sharpener won't work on tiny knives with blades less than about 3/8" wide (6mm or so) due to the way it clamps the blade and the geomentry of the guide. Large knives with blades longer than about 6" (150mm) must be sharpened in sections, which is inconvenient and time-consuming (I haven't purchased an Apex Edge Pro yet, but I have a hunch one is in my future for the kitchen knives). Never use an electric sharpener on fine cutlery. It will heat the blade and ruin its hardness. Many manufacturers will not honor their warranties on blades that have been abused with electric sharpeners (e. g. Buck).

Excellent sharpening system for utility knives, kitchen knives, and Balisongs
By Eagle Vision
My latest passion has been for Balisong knives. Many of the knives have high quality steel (D2, 440C, 154CM, VG10, and S30V). I like my knives razor sharp. This is an excellent system for sharpening your utility knives and kitchen knives.
WHAT IS IN THE BOX
Knife clamp
Color coded honing stones
Guide rods
Honing oil
Case
Guide
There are 4 different sharpening angles, as stated in the guide:
17 degrees: Razor blades, scalpels, or similar tool
20 degrees: High quality blades, kitchen cutlery, and fillet knives
25 degrees: Outdoor and hunting knives requiring a durable sharp edge
30 degrees: Heavy duty knife for cutting cardboard, wires or carpets
USE
The knife clamp allows the user to mount the blade easily. Attach the guide rod to the honing stone and set the sharpening angle. Put oil on the stone. Use the stone to sharpen the knife. This is a straightforward system for sharpening knives. Minor dings from cutting are removed easily. Even slight blunting of the tip of the blades are corrected.
This is a very good entry level system to get a professionally honed edge.

Nice and sharp, not quite perfect
By tangent
I used this to sharpen kitchen knives and straight razor primarily, I find that it can do knives up to 8" with no problem but anything over that will have to use multiple sections which is a chore.
The other gripe I have is that the 'ultra-fine' stone included is only 1000 grain, which is usually considered medium-fine or fine. Thus you can get a very sharp edge but will never be able to accomplish that razor sharp, mirror like finish of a factory sharpened knife. Lansky does sell an additional stone, the 'super sapphire' which is 2100 grain, and for another $10 I would highly recommend purchasing it if you plan to use this kit, as it gives much better finish than the ultra fine stone. Still, I wish they made a higher grade like 6000-8000 to really polish the edge.
On the upside, this system does a good and consistent job of sharpening with adjustable angles, and once you have used it a few times you can do it fairly quickly. Also it provides a large variety of stones for a low price, which is a big plus in my book.
