Fast, Easy Adjustments with Smart SelectUnlike most drills, Black & Decker Smart Select Drills make it easy to set your drill up correctly for specific jobs. Instead of having to guess which clutch, speed, and torque settings are right for a task, you simply pick the icon that most accurately represents that job you're taking on. Correctly setting your drill reduces the possibility of stripping a screw head, snapping a screw off, or driving too far into your work surface.
The 11 easy-to-read project icons let you account for driving small and large screws, drilling narrow and wide holes, and working with wood, metal, or plastic. Even experienced craftsmen are likely to enjoy the way this eliminates the trial and error process, which can result in damaing your work surface or project materials. This improved functionality is sure to be a bonus, whether you're building a doghouse, hanging bookshelves, or assembling custom furniture.
Cordless Design that's Comfortable to Grip
A rechargeable 12-volt battery means that this drill has plenty of power to meet the needs of most homeowners. 12-volt drills are popular because they offer an excellent compromise between low-voltage drills (for example, 4V), which serve as power screwdrivers, and high voltage drills (for example, 24V), which can be heavy, cumbersome, and unnecessary for ordinary tasks. And since this drill is cordless, you won't have to worry about straying from your power source, tripping, or threading a cord into an awkward space for a quick repair.
Any tool that fits comfortably in your hand improves your ability to get jobs done quickly and precisely, and a well balanced drill is no exception. This Smart Select Drill offers a T-style handle placed near the middle of the drill for improved comfort. The T-style grip distributes the tool's weight so that it doesn't tip forward and work against you on the job. And a T-style grip reduces wrist strain, so you can work comfortably for longer.
Another great feature is the keyless chuck, which means you'll never have to worry about a misplaced chuck key bringing work to a standstill. It's easy to change bits quickly, and you're less likely to have to stop and take protective gloves off than you would be with a keyed system. You'll find the ease of this setup extra convenient if you need to switch between driving and drilling often or if you wear gloves on the job.
This Smart Select Drill is backed by a full two-year warranty.
What's in the Box

From the Manufacturer
Most drills are designed with clutches, high and low speeds, torque settings and corresponding numbers for different power settings. These numbered settings are sometimes confusing to homeowners. To help simplify the best setting for your drilling/driving task, Black & Decker created Smart Select. Smart Select Drills offer a range of project icons to set the drill for optimal screwdriving and drilling to get projects done right. This prevents screws from being stripped, driving screws too far into a work surface, or drilling too fast or too slow. The project icons illustrate the best settings for driving small or large screws, or drilling small to wide holes in wood, metal and plastic. The easy-to-read icons help eliminate the trial and error of drilling too fast or too slow, which can damage a work surface or project materials. For light to heavy screwdriving, set the drill at one of the six icons of screws based on the size screw you are driving. For low-speed, heavy-duty drilling, set the drill at the icon for drilling into metal or the icon for drilling into wood with a 1" or larger spade bit. For high-speed drilling, set the drill at the icons for drilling into wood with a ¾" or smaller spade bit, drilling into plastic, or drilling into metal with small drill bits. Both experienced and beginning do-it-yourselfers will appreciate knowing and learning the best performance setting for projects, whether driving screws around the house, hanging shelves or assembling furniture.

Great tool
By Daniel Gardiner
I've had this drill for about a year, and have been very happy with it. The torque settings are pretty much standard, bit with images instead of numbers. It is powerful enough for everything I've thrown at it, seems well made and sturdy, and battery life is not bad at all. It has low speed low torque through low speed high/fixed torque and high speed for drilling. It fits comfortably in the hand. The drill bit holder on the side is pretty hard to get the bit out of, and I don't really use it as a result. Great tool, would buy again.

Not a "pro" tool, but great around the hosue
By Alex Malinovich
This is a great "lite" power tool to have around the house. For handling screws, drilling drywall, etc, it's excellent. The battery life is really good and the multitude of torque settings are useful. However, if you're wanting to do some serious home improvement projects, you should look elsewhere. I've found it to be a bit anemic when dealing with anything other than soft wood or drywall. If you need to drill metal, concrete, or tile this definitely will not get the job done adequately. I'm happy with it for what it is, which is a great tool for small jobs at a great price.

Engineer's Review
By Cory Burns
After using this for about seven years, my old version of this drill died only becuase I drilled through my wrought iron fence which meant constant use for several minutes at a time while I put about 50 lbs of weight on it in 100 degree F heat in the sun!! What I'm saying is this drill was not made for the conditions I put it in. I sill worked for a year, though it would smell burnt becuase I had cooked the insulation.
Don't let the other reviewers who claim the battery will die in a few years fool you. As with any NiCad battery, the key to long life is simple: fully charge, then disconnect from charger. Use the drill till the battery is dead or almost dead before recharge (don't use it shortly, then put it back on charger). If you do so, it will last almost indefinitely. My battery was good as new after 7 years.
I'm going to buy a new one now and will now use my corded drill for super heavy duty work. Use it for what it's made for - light to medium duty.
